What are these things growing in the desert? My dog likes to pee on them. They're not mushrooms by the way.

It might not be a mushroom but it's called a Maltese mushroom or red thumb. It also has the Arabic names Tartooth and Beesayl. Or for the reely brainy Cynomorium coccineum. See Abu Dhabbling for more.
Thanks Netty, I tried to look them up on the net but there's not much info on vegetation for this region.
